A multivariate morphometric analysis of diagnostic traits in southern Italy and Sicily pubescent oaks

2020

AbstractSpecies identification within the species complex ofQ. pubescensis a well-known taxonomic challenge among European botanists. Some of the specific pubescent oak binomials currently accepted in various European floras and checklists were originally described in Sicily and southern Calabria. As a consequence, several species belonging to the pubescent oaks group (Q. pubescens,Q. amplifolia,Q. congesta,Q. dalechampii,Q. leptobalanaandQ. virgiliana) are reported in the taxonomic and phytosociological literature. To verify whether it was possible to associate a diverse set of morphological characters with each of these different taxa, thirteen natural populations of pubescent oak from Si…

First record ofTetranychus ludeniZacher (Acariformes: Tetranychidae) in Italy

2018

Tetranychus ludeni Zacher is reported here for the first time in Italy. It was found on some cultivated and spontaneous plants, often associated with Tetranychus urticae Koch. Four phytoseiid mites, widely distributed in the Mediterranean countries, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, Iphiseius degenerans Berlese, Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) kerkirae Swirski and Ragusa, and Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) transvaalensis Nesbitt, were found associated with T. ludeni In Sicily. The morphological characters for the identification of the four Italian Tetranychus species are also reported.

Postharvest quality and sensory attributes of Ficus carica L

2017

The aim of this research was to evaluate the relationship between some physical and chemical characteristics and sensory descriptors of fig fruits ‘Dottato’ and ‘Melanzana’, belonging to the national germplasm bank of fig trees and cultivated in Southern Italy. The sensory principal descriptors used are external appearance, skin color, pulp color, odor, sweetness, stickiness, bitterness, juiciness, firmness, tannic taste and presence of achenes. Fresh weight, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), TSS:TA, firmness, and sensory properties changed with cultivar. SSC was more correlated with sensory attributes than TA, but other factors may also be important in controlling this r…

Characters, bilinear forms and solvable groups

2016

Abstract We prove a number of results about the ordinary and Brauer characters of finite solvable groups in characteristic 2, by defining and using the concept of the extended nucleus of a real irreducible character. In particular we show that the Isaacs canonical lift of a real irreducible Brauer character has Frobenius–Schur indicator +1. We also show that the principal indecomposable module corresponding to a real irreducible Brauer character affords a quadratic geometry if and only if each extended nucleus is a split extension of a nucleus.

Characters and Blocks of Finite Groups

1998

This is a clear, accessible and up-to-date exposition of modular representation theory of finite groups from a character-theoretic viewpoint. After a short review of the necessary background material, the early chapters introduce Brauer characters and blocks and develop their basic properties. The next three chapters study and prove Brauer's first, second and third main theorems in turn. These results are then applied to prove a major application of finite groups, the Glauberman Z*-theorem. Later chapters examine Brauer characters in more detail. The relationship between blocks and normal subgroups is also explored and the modular characters and blocks in p-solvable groups are discussed. Fi…

Large orbits ofp-groups on characters and applications to character degrees

2005

We prove that if ap-groupA acts on a solvablep′-groupG then there is a “large” orbit on the ordinary complex irreducible characters ofG. As a consequence of this theorem we obtain results that relate ordinary and Brauer character degrees.

HISTORIC URBAN CENTERS. CONSTRUCTION CHARACTERS AND SEISMIC VULNERABILITY

2018

Augmented Mirror: Interactive Augmented Reality System Based on Kinect

2011

Part 1: Long and Short Papers; International audience; In this paper we present a virtual character controlled by an actor in real time, who talks with an audience through an augmented mirror. The application, which integrates video images, the avatar and other virtual objects within an Augmented Reality system, has been implemented using a mixture of technologies: two kinect systems for motion capture, depth map and real images, a gyroscope to detect head movements, and control algorithms to manage avatar emotions.

A Telegraph for China: The Attempted Application of Caselli’s Pantelegraph to Transmit Chinese Characters, 1856−87

2016

In 1872 the Shanghai-based newspaper Shenbao described an invention by Giovanni Caselli that allowed the production of telegraphic messages containing Chinese characters, the ‘pantelegraph’, an ancestor of the fax, reproducing manu- scripts, images and symbols, and, as such, totally suitable for Chinese telegraphy. In 1863, the Italian inventor had shown his invention to a legation of Chinese diplomats in France, producing some impressive Chinese transmissions, the caselligrammi. The envoys reported this information back home, but for some reasons a commercial contact was only set twenty years later. Although in many ways this seemed to be a perfectly suitable solution for the telegraphic c…
